SERVICE
It is the intention of Charis Youth Center to provide nutritionally balanced
meals and snacks on a daily basis. Meals are planned according to the
Menu Planning Guide for School Food Service published by the U.S. Department
of Agriculture.
Breakfast
and lunch are supported through the Federal Food Supplement Program. Daily
records are submitted to the Office of Child Nutrition Service indicating
how standards for required meal components are met, the number of youth
and adults served, and the proportion of food provided.
While dinners
are not under the Federal Food Supplement Program, they are planned consistently
with the guidelines set for breakfast and lunch. All meals are presented
in a sit-down family environment with staff and visitors participating.
All meal plans, preparation (USDA required), and service meet the specifications
of the federal and state food supplement programs. In addition, a consulting
home economist reviews all nutritional factors and works with the treatment
team members to provide provisions for youth with special needs. Our group
homes welcome requests from the residents for special foods or food preference
by submitting a food request form. Also, holidays are celebrated with
traditional family-style meals. Menu planning is encouraged as a group
activity.
Snacks are
provided daily which consist primarily of vegetables, fruits, nuts, grains,
seeds, and juice and/or milk. When on an outing, a nutritiously-balanced
meal is prepared and pre-packed. We offer fresh fruits and vegetables
(organic when available), and healthy, nutritious, low-fat, high-protein
substitutes when possible. Recipes are not only nutritious, but quick
and easy to prepare and appealing to the eye. Thought and time are also
spent in setting the table for each meal.
